Kathryn's Long Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Let’s Make Her Bones Strong Again!

In November 2018, Kathryn was diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a rare form of bone marrow cancer. With this form of cancer, fibrous material grows where your bone marrow should be, eventually making it impossible for your bone marrow to perform its function- to produce healthy red and white blood cells and platelets. The next evolution from Myelofibrosis would be acute leukemia - we want to avoid that!

Most people who get this disease discover it when they are much older than Kathryn. Due to their age, they typically would be unable to sustain the one thing that could possibly cure this disease - a bone marrow transplant.

Her doctors at Mayo believe she is a perfect candidate for a bone marrow transplant and Kathryn is now on a waiting list for a bone marrow donor.  And while doctors are encouraged with success they’ve seen with bone marrow transplants in these cases, a bone marrow transplant is in and of itself very risky and could cause long-term complications.

Kathryn and her husband Tom are raising four amazing kids:  Hank, Ava, Louis and Abby. Born with a rare chromosomal disorder, Abby is pervasively developmentally delayed and counts on 24 hour support.  When Kathryn and Tom were married in 1996, Tom made the selfless decision to be a stay-at-home Dad and primary caregiver to Abby. As the family grew, Tom and Kathryn developed the perfect partnership:  Kathryn has been the sole financial provider and Tom the favorite neighborhood Dad. Doctors are targeting late summer 2019 for Kathryn’s transplant at Mayo. Without the transplant, and based on her progression of the cancer, the average life expectancy is around two years. Everyone, who knows Kathryn knows that she is tough as nails, but she is in for the toughest fight of her life and she needs our support. Post-transplant, Kathryn will require dedicated 24-hour care as she recuperates in a transplant home near the Mayo hospital, and has been told to plan for a 6-12 month recovery, during which she will not be able to work and support her family financially.

Any small donation to help with the mounting medical bills and care for Abby would go long way to support Kathryn and her family. Every little bit helps!  If you are looking for a way to help the Loviks, this is a simple but very meaningful way to support them in this difficult time!

If you would like to reach out to the Lovik family with words of support, feel free to email [email redacted] address with your sentiments, favorite Kathryn stories, or any photos or videos of the family.
