My cousin Kitty Heldwoman has been tireless in her efforts to continue the social media crusade to help the victims of the Nepal Earthquake. Kitty and I (Kat's cousin) were struck while helping to get Kathleen, Kevin, Brigida, and Oscar home, by the need of the people and we would like to continue to facilitate help to the people of LangTang who have lost so many loved ones, their homes and incomes.
Kat, Kevin, Brigida & Oscar are, thankfully, home. Yet the journey for so many is ongoing. As our initial recipients have been funded, and there is still so much need, we weill be continuing our efforts to fund Rasawa Relief and Shelterbox. "Rasuwa Relief exists to provide post-earthquake relief in both the immediate and long term to villages across Rasuwa – a district of Nepal's Central Development Region that is both severely affected by the 25 April 2015 earthquake and currently underserved by the aid community. This relief includes: direct humanitarian assistance for communities severely affected by the earthquake and subsequent avalanches, landslides, etc.; expert consultation on location designations for structural rebuilding efforts; and ongoing collaborative support for the durable reconstruction of villages and human security for communities throughout Rasuwa. To effectively and equitably support both short and long-term assistance to communities across the district, Rasuwa Relief will provide initial humanitarian relief at the rate of 33% to villages in the Langtang Valley and 67% to communities in other areas of Rasuwa, particularly the parts of Upper Rasuwa currently inaccessible. To bridge the gap between current and long-term needs, Rasuwa Relief will allocate 30-40% of resources for immediate disaster relief (depending on needs) and then the remaining funds will be dedicated toward long-term reconstruction in places like Langtang village. Overall, our efforts will be oriented towards both immediate triage and long-term spatial equity, towards combating persistent forms of socio-spatial exclusion, and towards facilitating a consistent flow of funds over time to support longer-term relief efforts. "

"The local people in the devastated Lang Tang valley are currently living in awful conditions with freezing snow, very little shelter or food. They rely on the income generated from Trekkers coming to their tea houses. The Nepalese people we met are beautiful, kind, funny and amazing. Now that Kat, Kevin, Brigida & Oscar are coming home, the purpose of this GoFundMe is being prioritzed into three parts:
The Baby with two broken legs, whom Brigida splinted & cared for, will recieve the first $5,000 for ongoing medical care.
The remaining funds will be split between:
A Fund to provide for the Sherpas who worked with, protected and assisted our Crew at great personal cost during a devastating time
and Shelterbox, whose mission is helping the broader LangTang valley and it's people recover and rebuild their lives from this disaster.
Thank you for opening your heart to the plight of people in Nepal who have suffered so much. Without your help and your generosity, our friends might still be lost, and with them hundreds of people would be freezing, starving & suffering without hope.
Original Post - Kathleen Heldman and her climbing partners Kevin Krogh, Brigida Martinez, and Oscar Olea are trapped above an avalanche in the Langtang region. They survived the avalanche that buried #Langtang Village, their starting point the day of the earthquake, and are now stranded at Kyanjin Gompa with 28 others. They cannot get out because of the debris and their injured fellows, including a baby with two broken legs.
Helicopters have airlifted two of the most critically injured, but the rest are still waiting with no immediate rescue forthcoming. Kat and crew are assisting people who are making their way up to Kyanjin Gompa from the Langtang Village. Many are wounded. Brigida Martinez is a nurse, but she is overwhelmed with the work.
Their climb has turned into a critical relief and rescue mission. They need food, water, medical supplies, and another trained medic. The baby needs to be airlifted to a hospital. We have located a Critical Response worker who is clearing his schedule to go to the Langtang region to help Kat and others in need. We are asking for help to cover the cost of his flight, other travel expenses, and a satellite phone.
Whatever does not get used for critical response will go to the porters (locals who have helped this group carry supplies for the climb) as many if not all have lost their families in the avalanches triggered by the earthquake.
Please give what you can and spread this on Social Media, and please quickly so all can be rescued and treated.
