Kathamala, A Literary Conference

Writing is often a solitary activity, but writers need a community to bounce off their ideas, to be seeded with new ones, to renew and refresh their calling to creation.  When artists and litterateurs meet each other, exchange ideas and critique each other, it gives birth to great joy and inspire greater art, not to mention the deep sense of fulfillment and encouragement and strengthen their efforts.





Michigan Literary and Theatrical Society (MILITS) partnered with Galpapath and Batayan plans to invite Bengali Literary Practitioners in the US and abroad to assemble at Kathamala 2018, Bengali Literary Conference including writing-workshops, panel discussions with numerous maestros of contemporary Bengali literature, art exhibitions, film fest etcetera.



For too long, lovers of Bengali literature in the US have worked in isolation and have only connected with other writers and readers only through magazines, websites and webzines. At Kathamala 2018, we would like it to become a platform that takes away gap for a while and brings all Bengali Language lovers and Practitioners come together to celebrate our art, language and everything in between. We have planned three days of sharing and learning about the heart and the craft of poetry, fiction, nonfiction and translation through discussions, readings and workshops.



We dream of a Bengal beyond borders and Bengalis that convene come to serve its beloved language. We believe this endeavor will nurture connections between Bengali writers across borders and help Bangla literature and poetry thrive on a global stage.
