Kate's Outreach Trip to Haiti

I am so excited to share with you that I have been invited to join a medical organization in a service learning initiative in Jacmel, Haiti from May 16th to May 23th. I hope to donate a week of my time providing medical services and support as a nursing student for a Haitian community in a rural health clinic in Jacmel. During my trip, I will be assisting anesthesiologists, surgeons and RN’s with patients in the OR, Post Op and Recovery unit.
The organization I am participating with is the non-profit Community Coalition for Haiti (CCH). CCH has been serving the medical needs of Haiti since 1989 and has since constructed a comprehensive medical clinic that allows clinicians to provide the underserved Haitian population with free specialty surgical care that is normally not available in the country. In addition to surgical care, CCH has developed a Child Wellness Program to educate on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, rural vaccination programs, and is currently in the process of building a full time dental clinic.
In spite of programs like CCH, Haitians continue to suffer substandard living conditions and economic hardships since the 2010 earthquake, hurricane Hanna and the subsequent cholera epidemic. It remains the poorest nation in the Americas and donor financing is on the decline. This leaves Haitians with significant unmet needs in the basic services. This is why I want to contribute.
The only obstacle I need to overcome now is the cost of the trip: $2000. Any amount that you can donate to cover travel, housing, and food expenses would be greatly appreciated! If you want to help be a part of the service I will be doing in Haiti, please consider donating.
