Kastner Berger

Donation protected
Due to the complexity of the surgeries and the requirement for multiple, we are asking for any assistance in helping cover these costs to meet our insurance out of pocket maximum.

Kastner Michael Berger was born on 03.21.2018 at 2:08 am at Mount Carmel West and was a pretty textbook induction.  His journey to delivery took around 25 hours to have momma reach full dilation and was induced to avoid some issues with high blood pressure.  His water broke naturally and during active delivery took no more than 20 minutes to grace us with his presence. He was born 20 inches long and 7 lbs. 8 ounces, our littlest baby but not by much.  His APGAR scoring was just fine with an 8 and 9 and seemed to be a healthy normal baby.  During the first 24 hours of life, he went through various testing and visits from nurses and pediatricians assured he was doing just fine.  He had no issue latching or feeding.

During his 24 hour checkup, they now run a cardiac test that looks for oxygen levels in various parts of the body.  If these numbers differ between core and extremities it is usually indicative of an issue pushing blood through the body.  At 4:00am the second day, the nurse practitioner returned with the results of our check-up.

He had failed the cardiac test and would immediately be moved to the NICU.  For what seemed like an eternity we waited for our turn to go see him once he had been stabilized.  We had no idea what we were up against and the thought of not seeing him caused a lot of grief.  When the time came, around 10am, we were led back and sat with Kastner until a tech from Nationwide Children's came to give him an echo (a sonogram of the heart).  Wasn't but a few minutes later that we were told he had to be moved from Mount Carmel to Children's.

Once moved to Nationwide Children's he was diagnosed with an interrupted aortic arch and a narrowing of his aorta. Surgeries will start this Tuesday to repair the arch and correct the aorta for the time being until the heart can grow and support a second surgery to repair the remaining issues.
