I struggle to write the story of my best friend's cancer journey. It is always hard to ask for help but when times are tough you need to reach out to people for help. Karry's journey with cancer started in 2011 with eye cancer. There was no treatment in Regina so she was sent to Toronto to see a doctor and determine what or if she could receive any treatment. Thankfully she received radiation therapy to her eye, but the outcome of the treatment was unsuccessful and she is now blind in her right eye. During her treatment process in Toronto she and her husband John were saddened with the news the cancer had spread to her liver. Over the next two years of treatment and numerous trips to Toronto she was refered to Edmonton for Theraspere treatment to her liver. Due to the type of treatment only 1/2 the liver could be treated so another trip to Edmonton was upon them.
In February of 2017 she had a biopsy of a lump from her arm and it to was cancerous. After CT scans and MRI's she discovered the cancer had spread to her stomach, lungs and numerous tumors which appear on her neck, chest, head, back and arms.
Saskatchewan has no treatment options available due to the severity of her cancer. She placed a phone call to her Dr. in Toronto and within 5days she was on a flight to Toronto for treatment options. She did blood work to determine if any of the three cancer trials would benefit her. The first two trials she does not qualify for. The remaining treatment plan is a two year program which she just started. It will consist of a two week stay in hospital, 4 weeks of living in Toronto to be close to the hospital and the remainder of the treatment is a trip to Toronto every 3rd week for the next 2 years. In the last 4 weeks they have already made 3 trips to Toronto on short notice which is very costly.
John would never leave her side and makes all the trips with her. The stress of missing work and having to pay for numerous trips to Toronto have already taken a toll on them. The funds we raise will help with everyday expenses when you have to miss work. They will also go towards airfare, hotel, meals for the next 2 years of travel.
She will never give up....neither will John. She wants to see her three beautiful grandchildren grow up.
