Bernie and Dave Karpan, Go-Fund-Me
Bernie met Dave in Saskatchewan in 1967. A few months later she was offered a job in Yellowknife when it first became the capital if the Northwest Territories.
A year later they met again in Yellowknife and have been married and inseparable ever since. They rasied two children, their beautiful daughter Leah and their unforgettable son Davey who died tragically in a car accident. Bernie could never get over losing her son and after working so many years with the Government of the NWT, had to take an early (medical) retirement.
A few years later she was diagnosed with Diabetes and soon she was going in daily for dialysis. She’s been trying to get on a transplant list for many years and has spent long periods of time in the hospital (Yellowknife and Edmonton)
Recently she has had colonoscopy issues and is now awaiting a biopsy results – which puts her transplant status on hold.
Her and Dave never know from day to day what will happen with Bernie’s health. Many times he has to rush her to the emergency from Prelude Lake (30 minutes from Yellowknife) she is sent by medivac to Edmonton so many times and when Dave has to escort her he is unsure of how long he has to be away from his job as a self employed Construction worker (which means no income).
They live off-grid with their two beloved dogs, Kacey and Bear (who is an un-trained service dog as he has nudged her awake many times when her blood sugar was dangerously low)
They burn wood as well as fuel and use a generator when needed. They recently blocked off the majority of their house to save on heating costs.
