My Volunteer Trip

Starting on the 26th November 2017, I will be volunteering in the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks as part of a Gap Medics placement.   I will spend one week at the government-run, specialist traumatology hospital,
'Hospital Docente Universitario Dr. Dario Contreras’ and during my second week I will travel to different Bateyes and see how essential healthcare is delivered to some of the poorest communities in the Dominican Republic.
Bateyes are communities which have been set up to house sugar cane workers and their families, many of which don't even have basic facilities such as running water and a toilet.  Low wages make it near impossible for these individuals to afford transportation to a clinic or hospital – the average worker earns about five dollars a day working dawn until dusk. Hence, such communities really rely on these kinds of projects and I am so excited to be a part of this.

The trip is self-funded and will cost me about $5000, which includes the placement itself, flights, travel insurance etc.  I would really appreciate your support! Thanks!
