December 14th, started out a day of celebration for my youngest sister Lauren's birthday, and ended a day of tragedy. Yesterday, my mother lost a five-year battle with grief and depression. She had been struggling since August of 2009, when my sister, Gretchen, took her life after suffering through her own lengthy battle with depression.
The absence of her oldest daughter from this celebration and the thought of the upcoming holidays, with her depression, this sadness, loss, and feeling of hopelessness proved to be too painful for my mother to bear. I know from day to day she tried very hard to live and get through everything with a smile, and she almost made it though another painful holiday. She will no longer be suffering.
With the holidays and this heartbreaking and unexpected tragedy, we are having difficulty with funding the funeral, and because of the circumstances there will be no insurance to help us with these expenses. My sister Lauren is the only one who lived in the area, she was the rock for my mother after Gretchen’s suicide, and is now trying to pick up the pieces from this ordeal. I am active duty Navy therefore my career takes me away from my family so I cannot physically be there to help and support her long term, nor do I have the ability to help as much as I would like to with these expenses. Anything and everything would help. I think if we can get some donations and finances don’t have to be added to the list of things to worry about, that would go a long way in allowing the much needed time to grieve and heal.
