Karl Max Salathe IV Memorial Scholarship Fund

Donation protected
This scholarship fund will be established in memory of my cousin, Karl Max Salathe IV, Kearsarge Regional High School class of 1983, who fought a brief battle with cancer before passing on June 6, 2019.

They say that cousins are your first friends, and how lucky were we to grow up next to our cousins. Karl Max was a fixture in my childhood, whether it was hiking Meetinghouse Hill or swimming at Sunapee or building a fort in the woods near our homes. If it involved being outside or building or seeking adventure, Karl Max was sure to make it fun.

If you were lucky enough to know my cousin, you know what a kind and gentle soul he was. I had the privilege of seeing Karl Max shortly before he passed. His pride in his children was palpable, his oldest on the brink of graduating high school and college in his future. Karl Max spoke about how he came to realize later in life the value of higher education.

To honor Karl Max, this scholarship fund will be given annually to one graduating senior at Kearsarge Regional High School in North Sutton, NH. All funds raised will be used to establish and continue this scholarship.

Below is the scholarship description:

Karl Max Salathe IV  “Ripples of Kindness” Scholarship

Karl Max was a devoted son, brother, cousin, and father of four children.  He was a longtime resident of the Kearsarge area until his untimely passing in June of 2019. Like Karl Max and many other members of his family, his children are also members of the Kearsarge community.  Karl loved designing and building things with his hands.  He was an avid outdoorsman spending as much of his time on the water and in the woods and mountains as possible.  Most remarkably, he treated every person who crossed his path with kindness, listening always with compassion, and delighting completely in the beauty of the moment. As with nature itself, Karl Max had the gift of leaving others better than when he found them.

The recipient of this scholarship should embody Karl Max’s spirit of kindness, compassion, and love of the outdoors. In addition to a scholarship, a tree will be planted in the recipient’s name to honor Karl Max’s commitment to nature.
