Karissa Massey's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hi! Friday August 17th, Karissa and her boyfriend Daniel were on their way home from work when they suffered a car crash that has left Karissa in the ICU and tragically took Daniel's life.
First responders said she was conscious when they arrived but that she couldn't feel her legs or arms. She was taken by helicopter from the scene of the accident to Medical City Denton in Denton Texas. Karissa's injuries include a fractured C5 and C6 and a spiral fracture in her right humerus.
Saturday she went through a 10 hour surgery to repair the fractures in her C5 and C6. Following her surgery she received the devastating news that she had lost the love of her life, Daniel. Saturday evening Karissa had a CAT scan and MRI to check the results of the first surgery. After Saturday's surgery she was able to feel her toes and within a couple hours she even was able to lift her legs. The nurses and doctors were incredibly impressed with her strength and attitude while going through something they said most people wouldn't have lived through. While she had feeling in her legs,  she wasn't able to completely feel her arms and did not have use of her hands.  After talking with nurses, we understood we needed to give it more time and that hopefully once the swelling started to go down, she would gain more feelings in her arms.
Sunday Karissa needed rest and pain management. She underwent a second surgery this morning, where they had to add a permanent metal plate in her arm in order to repair the break in her humerus. She remains in ICU for now, but hopefully will be moved to a regular room soon and after that will go through months of rehab to regain strength in her arms and legs. The feeling and use of her arms and hands is still unknown as the surgery was just today.
The road to recovery is going to be long and painful for Karissa. She works at Kirby's in Winstar and it is uncertain when she will be able to return to work at this time. Her career requires full use of her legs and arms and at this time her injuries are too new to know what the future looks like.
She and Daniel lived in Ardmore Oklahoma, but Karissa will need to be relocated back to Oklahoma City to make sure she has the care she will need while healing.
She also does not have health insurance so these bills will be coming directly to Karissa.
We will be updating this page every time there is a change in Karissa's progress. We really appreciate all of you, and any donation you can make. This is going to be the hardest time of Karissa's life and we want to make sure that she doesn't have to worry about any finances as she heals both physically and mentally.
