I am a retired social worker of 30 years standing. Throughout my career I worked with children at risk of abuse and neglect and people with disabilities. I held various positions on boards and committees.
Due to my experience I have seen a devastating gap in services available for adults experiencing Aspergers /Autism who need to rely on their family and friends for support to live as independently as possible.
The adults are being cared for by their ageing parents and this gets harder for both the adult child and parent every day.
An example case is a 45 year old adult with Aspergers being cared for by his ageing parents. His dad is a Vietnam Vereran with Leukemia and other medical issues and his mum needs at least 4 operations a year to function. His mum' s condition will continue to deteriorate. Both parents have dedicated their life to ensuring their son has as active A life as possible but this is getting harder each day.
My quest is to raise funds for motel style accommodation where up to 6 adults with Aspergers / Autism are being cared for by ageing parents can begin to live independent lives and be supported with individual care packages which include learning new living skills and independent use of transport and other areas of life that we take for granted.
Motel style accommodation will ensure privacy but will provide a space for independent living as well as social activities to reduce isolation and encourage new friendships and support from peers.
Residents would contribute to maintain their home by paying rent using a costing similar to public housing.
Community supports will be provided on an individual assessment of needs basis and parents and friends will be encouraged to continue supporting their loved one at a capacity they can cope with.
The purchase of an old motel and renovating it to the needs of the residents would be the ideal place to start. Alternatively, buying land and building a purpose built home is another option.
Our population is ageing and adults experiencing Aspergers/Autism desperately need this option and so do their parents.
Please help me to help them. I will remain engaged with this most deserving project from beginning to end to ensure a respectful, caring outcome for everyone involved.
