Kapili's Study Abroad Trip to Aotearoa

‘O Kapili’ula Naehu-Ramos ko’u inoa. I am a student at Molokai High School, where I will be entering my senior year this fall. I am an honor roll student and I am involved in various extracurricular activities such as Student Council, LEO Club, PAAC and Multicultural Club, MEPO (an environmental preservation club), Swimming, Judo, and Track and Field. I have been immersing myself in academically challenging courses since my Freshman year, when I started taking early college courses. Since then I’ve taken English 100 and English 104, and Advanced Placement and Honors courses. I plan on going to college after high school to study art and/or creative writing. I would love to see the arts of different cultures, especially our Polynesian neighbors, the tangata Maori. After college I want to create art to inspire indigenous peoples and raise awareness, and I would love to teach native keiki in different communities.
Earlier this year, I applied and was accepted to a summer program through UH Manoa, which is Manoa Academy: Aotearoa. I will be taking POLS 160, Introduction to International and Global Studies, which is a course that introduces undergraduate student to the major political, social, economic, cultural, technological, and historical dimensions of globalization, instructed by Dr. Noelani Goodyear-Ka'opua. The first week of the program is to be held at UH Manoa,then we will spend two weeks in Aotearoa, mainly in Waikato/Tainui territory, and we will celebrate the opening of Matariki, meet local community leaders, and participate in the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association Conference (NAISA), which brings together over 1,000 Indigenous Studies scholars from countries throughout the world. The course introduces global political issues through Indigenous lenses, while cultural experiences and exchange ground students in Hawai‘i and Aotearoa, revealing the deep ancestral connections between our islands and peoples. This program will give me an opportunity to make connections with people of another culture and learn alongside other haumana that are invested in indigenous futures.

Although most travel expenses are covered by sponsors, I need to pay for regular summer tuition and meals, which will add up to an estimated 1700 US dollars. I would be so grateful for any support, no amount is too little. I will keep you updated during my journey by sharing pictures and some details on my experience throughout the program.
