Kankhwende House Fire Fund

On the evening of January 5, 2018, our dear family and friends Ellen (Chiku) Kankhwende, Mwinji Mtonga, Kondwani (Ken) Kankhwende, Wright Selemani and Damali Ondiek (Ellen's son) lost their home in a horrific fire.  Wright was the only one in the house at the time of the fire; he sustained burns to his right hand and knee. Fortunately, there were no other injuries or loss of life, but the family is displaced and lost everything in the fire. The families who resided in the same row of townhouses have also been displaced.

Ellen and family are currently staying with family in Kensington, MD until long-term, temporary housing is provided. They will reside in temporary housing for about one year while their house is rebuilt. This will undoubtedly be a long and challenging journey for the family and they will need a lot of support and encouragement as they pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support Ellen and family have already received since Friday from friends, family, colleagues, Damali's school, and compassionate strangers. Countless others have been touched by this tragedy and would like to help the family through this difficult time. The family welcomes any donations that will assist with living expenses, clothing, legal fees, and transportation costs. If you would prefer to donate specific clothing items (e.g., coats, socks) or other household items (e.g., towels, pots), please contact us for specific needs (e.g., sizes).
