Kane Family Fund

Hello everyone,
My nephew (Kane) was born with a condition called esophageal atresia.  Put simply, Kane was born with little to no esophagus.  Kane spent the first seven months of his life in a hospital and has returned numerous times for numerous surgeries since.  These surgies have attempted to correct his condition.  However, throughout these many procedures, doctors have not be able to fix the leaks in his esophagus.

Last year doctors decided to completely remove his esophagus and fix a lung condition caused by the leaks.  That's when Kane was fitted for a bag that attaches to his neck because of his inability to swallow.

Also, because of the leaks and lung condition, doctors recommended that Kane live in a warm moist environment.  My brother and sister-in-law sold everything and started a new life for their family in Florida so Kane could be comfortable.

Before they left for Florida, I watched my nephew sit with the family during Thanksgiving, chew his food, and then spit it into a cup. It was heartwrenching.  Nevertheless, Kane persevered and held high hopes that his next surgery would be his last.  Doctors decided to use a section of Kane's colon to replace his missing esophagus.

This surgery took place at the end of June and many more have happened since.  However, the surgeries have essentially failed.  Kane still has an esophagus that does not funtion and he may never have one that does.

Nevertheless, over the past month, my brother and sister-in-law have never left their son's side and never lost hope.  They speak with doctors around the country (and world) holding onto the hope that Kane can be healthy one day.  The amount of heartache and disapointment they must feel is something I could not even imagine.  It astounds me how much weight they carry on their shoulders without collapsing.

Not only have Jeremy and Reeta (brother and sister-in -law) not left Kane's side, they have struggled to make sure their other two sons have a "normal" summer.  Family has really helped with this.

Now, because Kane's surgery took place in Peoria, Jeremy has been unable to return to work for over a month and has had many added expenses since their arrival and their indefinite stay.  They have never been ones to ask for help, so I am asking for them.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  All procedes would go directly to their expenses and anything extra would be donated to a charity for hospitalized children with struggling families.

Sincerely,

A worried uncle
