Our sister Kaley, is the gentlest and kindest person you'll ever meet. After reading this story, you'll quickly realise that she is an inspirational and courageous woman.
Life is cruel. Why Kaley, we ask ourselves?
At the age of 13 Kaley had kidney failure which resulted in her having a kidney transplant when she was 15. Her new kidney has lasted a healthy 19 years - still strong today. Sport has always been Kaley's biggest enjoyment, so she participated in the Transplant Games numerous times, where she won Gold in various events.
In April 2014, Kaley gave birth to her beautiful daughter Gracie-Mae. Gracie was born 9 weeks premature at a tiny 3lbs. This was due to Kaley developing pre-eclampsia. Kaley always under-estimated the severity of this condition, she was very ill during her last few days of pregnancy, but she talks of it as a 'walk in the park'.
In July 2014, Kaley started to get a pain in her right groin. After months of persistant visits to the doctors, she was finally referred to a physiotherapist in September. This did not work. By December, she had an MRI scan, which quickly led to a CT scan and a biopsy.
The results were heartwrenching.
In February 2015 Kaley was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer of the pelvic bone (osteosarcoma). The tumour was sizeable and required immediate action. Chemotherapy was meant to start right away, however her transplanted kidney was only functioning at 40%. In order for chemotherapy to begin, the consultants required it to be functioning at 60% or above. 2 weeks of being hospitalised and on a drip - the kidney was at 60% so... chemotherapy begun. Just 4 days of chemo, Kaley's luscious, thick, black hair fell out and she developed a potential fatal infection around her heart. Chemotherapy could not continue as she was too ill.
At the end of March, another MRI scan and CT scan detected that the tumour had doubled in size. Chemotherapy had not shrunk the tumour at all. Surgery is now the only option. On 7th April, Kaley was advised that the only chance of success is to amputate her right leg, hip and 2/3 of her pelvis.
Kaley is a fitness instructor and this is a job that she loves so much. We want her to continue sport and one day become a specialised fitness instructor.
This year there are a number of fundraising events to help raise money for Kaley to live a comfortable and enjoyable life. We want to be able to pay for a range of of wheelchairs so that she can have the ability to take part in sport again. We also want her to have a top of the range prosthetic limb. Funds will also help make the necesary changes to her home, to make her daily routine as easy as possible.
Kaley will not let cancer defeat her. She will show us all how to kick cancer's arse.
