A Wedding That Gives Back

Dear Friends and Family,
We're so pleased you'll be joining us in celebrating our wedding in September. Truly, nothing makes us happier than having all of you together for one big party! And we'd like to pay our gratitude forward in hopes that the joy we'll share in September can ripple out toward others who could use a little more help in order to feel a little more joy. That's why instead of receiving wedding gifts, we'd like to extend the goodwill of this celebration to a worthy charity that we believe in: Give Directly
Give Directly is a reputable and trustworthy charity with a simple proposal for reducing poverty: what if we just gave money directly to people who needed it the most? Give Directly's evidence-based approach of giving direct cash transfers to the poorest households in Kenyan, Rwandan and Ugandan villages is effective and transparent. There is pretty good research out there to show that such cash transfer aren't just spent on booze and cigarettes. Instead, people do what you or I would do: they spend the money on covering their families' basic needs, and then they invest some of it in order to raise their incomes. Here's a TED Talk on this approach to giving.
We're really excited about Give Directly for a few reasons: (1) their approach works, and they keep an eye on it with research; (2) they value transparency and efficacy in charity - you can even follow the progress of individual recipients on their GD Live page ; (3) they are the only non-health related charity that made the cut for GiveWell's list of top charities; and (4) they're crypto-friendly, accepting Bitcoin and other coins on their website ;-)
They've also experimented with universal basic income (UBI) in Kenya, and shared some interesting results here. You can learn about their approach, their results, and more on their FAQ page.
