Kacee's Run For Recovery Fund

Kacee McKee, son of Mary Ann Grannis, step-son of Kelly Grannis, suffered a spinal injury in an auto accident December 23rd. You may be following the story on Facebook. Kacee has a high vertebra fracture leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. As you can imagine, reality is setting in that Kacee’s recovery will be very long, complex, involving a team of professionals, and it will be expensive. The next step in the recovery process will be a move to a physical rehabilitation unit, probably in Atlanta. Available there is an adolescent unit specializing in spinal injuries, and they have a successful track record for achieving the maximum possible recovery for each person.
Kacee had just finished his first semester at college and was looking forward to going back in the spring. He worked part time at an after school boys and girls club and the children absolutely adored him for his playfulness, kindness, and fabulous smile. The children have sent him many handmade cards which cheers him up to look at. Kacee has always been very physically active, playing football, soccer and on the swim team in high school. He ran and worked out every day. We are hopeful that rehabilitation will help him become physically active again. He already talks about playing wheelchair basketball.
I’m Jacqueline Grannis Schwartz, Kelly’s sister. This note describes how you can help Mary Ann and Kelly deal with this tragedy by donating to a “Go Fund Me” account. I’m sure many of you have wondered “How would I deal with this if it happened to my family?” A situation like this may be the most challenging for any family. Financially the picture is this: Mary Ann has taken time off from work; she has been Kacee's finger to scratch his nose, his interpreter, his supporter. Her personal leave and vacation have run out; she received her last paycheck. Now Mary pays her portion of the health insurance to the company she works for out of their pocket. She is on family medical leave from work and it remains to be seen if she will be able to return to work or whether she'll be Kacee’s round the clock care giver. Kelly is working, but he has traveling to Cincinnati each evening to be with his family. The expense of travel and food adds up fast.
Following approximately 6 weeks of rehabilitation in Atlanta Kacee will likely be able to live at home requiring complicated nursing care, medical equipment and supplies. A special van will be needed to transport Kacee to medical appointments and hopefully to social outings. The home will likely need renovation to accommodate wheelchair and special equipment. They estimate that they can make a good dent in these costs if donations reach $10,000. I know that seems like a lot of money and it is, but just the retro fit of a van with a lift is $10,000.
I’m digging deep into my pocket to help this family, and I ask you to do the same. Please spread the word by sharing this Go Fund Me on your Facebook page or by emailing the link to your friends and family. Perhaps you can collect a little money from others you know on behalf of the Grannis/Mckee family. Or would you be able to conduct a fund raiser to secure more monies? I'm going to sell a few items I really don't need to be better spent on this fund.
