This project has been started by UBC students and aims toward promoting safe interactions and truly flattening the curve. With the upcoming flue season, the possibility of a second outbreak is imminent. Hence, what better way to help prepare and participate in the ongoing efforts to helping the community and frontline workers during such times.
In light of the ongoing pandemic, medical personnel have been the sole recipients of most 3D printed masks and other PPE’s. We noticed that nationwide efforts to distribute masks and other personal protective equipment to hospitals have left essential service workers operating grocery stores, or other small businesses are working without sufficient protection. With the upcoming flu season, a second wave of the outbreak could strike, leaving many in devastation and despair. To truly flatten the curve, we believe that personal protective equipment should be readily available for all facets of essential services. Our goal is to 3D-print face shields for small businesses, shelters, and grocery employees that continue to operate across the Northshore. While ambitious, we would also like to eventually provide rural, Indigenous communities with face shield supplies, given the deficit in support, and resources that were present even before the onset of the pandemic. We anticipate that some expenditures will be paid out-of-pocket, but we hope that this fundraising will reimburse some of the costs.
Empowerment is a tool that brings about change and bold initiatives. As with many others, we were in the same boat of having our work/volunteer postponed as a result of the pandemic. What we initially saw as a disappointment, eventually transpired into an opportunity for self-empowerment at a time when we, quite frankly, felt useless. While it may be difficult to empirically measure the success of our project, we hope to grow our understanding of operating a 3D-printer from trial-and-error, enrich our soft skills from communicating with the recipients of our face shields and foster new relationships to our network whilst giving back to our city.
Please help us on this journey and take part in the efforts to support the vulnerable. Although minuscule, any donation can help and will make this project closer to its ultimate goal of 3D printing PPE's to those who are unable to afford or access such essential equipments. Currently, there is a scarcity of PPE's and has left many community workers out in the open without sufficient protection.
