<div>We staan op een <strong>kantelpunt</strong>. De aarde warmt sneller op dan ooit. Daardoor sterven koraalriffen in hoog tempo af. Ze beschermen miljoenen mensen tegen de impact van stormen, zorgen voor voedsel en zijn thuis voor een kwart van al het zeeleven. Als we zo doorgaan, verdwijnen ze voorgoed. Maar er is ook hoop. Wetenschappers zeggen dat we de koers nog kunnen omkeren. Als we nú in actie komen, kunnen we het verschil maken en onze oceanen weer laten leven.

<div><strong>Wat?</strong>
</div>
<div>Bij BRANCH doen we baanbrekend onderzoek naar hoe koralen beter kunnen overleven in een warmere oceaan. We bouwen voort op het werk van Professor <em>Madeleine van Oppen</em>, die liet zien dat koralen hittetolerant worden gemaakt door assisted evolution: het ontwikkelen van algen die beter tegen warmte kunnen, die later in het koraal worden gebracht. Wij passen deze methode toe op het Caribische koraal <em>Favia fragum</em>, dat zijn algen doorgeeft aan zijn nakomelingen. Zo kunnen we onderzoeken of deze “superalgen” blijvend samenwerken met het koraal, ook bij hoge temperaturen.Met deze kennis kunnen we koralen kweken die beter bestand zijn tegen klimaatverandering; een doorbraak die nodig is om riffen en het zeeleven dat daarvan afhankelijk is, te redden.

<div><strong>Waar we het geld voor gebruiken?:</strong>
</div>
<div>Met jullie steun bouwen we in Breda een onderzoeksopstelling waarin we koralen kunnen testen en sterker maken tegen hitte. Het geld gaat naar aquaria, pompen, verwarmingselementen, lampen, sensoren en microscopen. Alles wat nodig is om onze koralen van dichtbij te bestuderen.

<div>Daarnaast investeren we in onderzoeksapparatuur, zout en chemische stoffen om het zeewater precies op de juiste waardes te houden. Zo kunnen we in een gecontroleerde omgeving echte “hittegolven” nabootsen en onderzoeken hoe koralen en hun algen zich aanpassen aan stijgende temperaturen.

<div><strong>Why?</strong>
</div>
<div>We are at a tipping point. The planet is warming faster than ever before, and as a result, coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate. These reefs protect millions of people from storms, provide food, and are home to a quarter of all marine life. If we continue like this, they will disappear forever.

<div>But there is hope. Scientists say we can still turn the tide. If we act now, we can make a real difference and bring our oceans back to life.

<div><strong>What?</strong>
</div>
<div>At BRANCH, we are conducting groundbreaking research on how corals can better survive in a warming ocean. We build on the work of Professor Madeleine van Oppen, who demonstrated that corals can become heat-tolerant through assisted evolution: developing algae that are more resistant to heat and then introducing them into corals.

<div>We apply this method to the Caribbean coral Favia fragum, which passes its algae on to its offspring. This allows us to study whether these “super algae” can maintain a long-term partnership with the coral, even under high temperatures. With this knowledge, we can cultivate corals that are more resilient to climate change — a breakthrough essential to saving reefs and the marine life that depends on them.

<div><strong>What will the funds be used for?</strong>
</div>
<div>With your support, we are building a research setup in Breda where we can test and strengthen corals against heat stress. The funds will go toward aquariums, pumps, heaters, lamps, sensors, and microscopes — everything needed to study our corals up close.

<div>We also invest in research equipment, salts, and chemical compounds to keep the seawater precisely balanced. This allows us to simulate real “heatwaves” in a controlled environment and study how corals and their algae adapt to rising temperatures.
