Cats, Cats, Cats ! We Need Your Help!
The story is typical. You take home that cute kitten, then it grows up! The female starts yowling when she goes into heat and in desperation you let her outside. The young male starts spraying all over your house and you kick him out!
So your female is soon pregnant and has a litter of kittens. Aren’t they cute? Then a few months later, she has another litter – then another litter. She can have as many as 5 litters a year!! If the kittens are born outside, then they become feral and just keep multiplying.
Then your male cat, who is outside roaming around, gets into fights all the time. You can hear them at night – screaming and howling – waking up the whole neighbourhood. Many of those roaming cats get hit by cars, killed by dogs or freeze to death in the cold temperatures.
Second Chance Pet Network is the only No-Kill animal shelter in Northwestern Ontario. We receive dogs and cats from the entire region, which includes the communities of Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Balmertowns, Ear Falls, Kenora, Vermillion Bay, Fort Frances and Atikokan as well as over 50 First Nations communities.
In 2014, we took in 108 cats....74 of them were between 3 weeks and 6 months of age. The shelter was already full but what were we to do? Let them freeze? Starve? Be killed by other animals?
In 5 years, we have rescued over 800 cats! All of the cats are spayed/neutered, immunized and micro-chipped before being put up for adoption. Many of these cats are brought to the shelter as adult strays or as an unwanted litter of kittens.
We need your help to continue with our Spay/Neuter program. We want to do 400 surgeries in the next year at a cost of about $100 each. Our local vets work along with us providing excellent care for these animals. We also do low cost spay/neuter for area dogs.
