My name is Barbara Pacheco and I am writing in regards to a Mr. Julian Bernal.  He was an employee of Alcatel-Lucent for 35 years and retired in 2006.  He speaks very highly of this company and is very proud to have worked there.

Recently he has become very ill.  He was diagnosed with stage 4 SQUAMA CELL CARCINOMA of his SUPRA GLOTTIC LARYNX.   He has cancer. He first got sick with a sore throat, he thought that would go away with OTC medicines, then he could no longer talk in a normal tone of voice and he thought that was part of a cold or simple laryngitis.  Not long after that he could no longer swallow easily.  I took him to the doctor and they ran a lot of tests on him.  They did a ct scan of his throat and saw a very large mass.  They said that it was a tumor.  They sent Him to MD ANDERSON to get more tests done.  They did a scope test on him and said that it was cancer.  They said that if they did not do an emergency surgery on his throat…that he might die in a few days if he did not get that surgery done.  He is home  and has a trache in his throat.  He will have to go through Chemo and radiation treatments, and more surgeries. He has also lost his vocal chords.  They will have to reconstruct his whole neck area.

Last week he got ill and had to take him to the ER at MD Anderson hospital.  It was about 2 in the morning..The engine in the truck seized.  We called for help.  He has a lot of radiation and chemo treatments that he NEEDS.

With that information in mind...The reason that I am writing you is because he needs help.  We called the American Cancer Society to see if he could get help.  They will help us with a total of 10 rides.  We have already used that. We basically have no way to get to his appointments. .  By the time he pays rent, and other bills including all the prescriptions, co-pays, ,  he has nothing left to try and get another vehicle.

He has a lot of appointments at MD Anderson.  Some of them last 12 hours.  With chemotherapy and radiation it has taken a toll on him. He has big blisters and burns on his neck.
