My name is Adam Bayne, and I have created this account for my friend, Shannon Alsbrooks. I have done so because Shannon is such a special person and cares for those around her. Bottom line, I'm doing this for Shannon because I know for a fact she'd do the same for me, my wife, or either one of my daughters. Here's her story:
Brief description of PKD . . .
Polycystic Kidney Disease is a genetic disorder where there are numerous cyst growths. The cyst can slowly replace much of the kidney . . . reducing kidney function and leading to kidney failure.
A little about Shannon . . .
In 1991 Shannon was diagnosed with PKD and until 2012 her condition was manageable. She had her first surgery on her right kidney and liver to remove as many cysts as the doctor could, but over time the cysts grew back and actually ended up bigger than before.
In August 2014 Shannon had Fistula Surgery to prepare her for future dialysis. This is where the main artery in her wrist is connected to another vein. Unfortuately she is now in Stage 5 kidney failure. Once her kidney levels drop to the lowest allowed level she will begin dialysis. Fortunately, in Decemeber she was told that she is now on the Kidney Transplant List!
Shannon is anemic on top of PKD. She owns her own business, but because of her conditions has had to cut her list of clientele down; her body simply can't handle working long days. Shannon must take a cocktail of medicine everyday . . . for pain, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, anemia, and arthritis. Day to day is a struggle and every day her medical bills are mounting (testing, surgeries, medicine, and doctor visits).
AWESOME UPDATE . . .
I got this message from Shannon over facebook the other day, "Just found out I have a live donor that is a perfect match for me! So in the next few months I will hear something about transplant! It's a good friend of mine! Long road ahead!"
