Hello Everyone...my name is Brett and I started this campaign for my 13 year-old niece Marra. Here's her story.
Just after Thanksgiving 2014 Marra started to have terrible headaches. They were so severe that my sister Marlo took her to the emergency room. While there, Marra underwent several tests, but was released because nothing was found.
Marra continued to have headaches and was generally not well, but she fought through the pain because she didn't want to complain. Unfortunately, she did have a more serious problem. On December 9th, 2014, I received a call from my mother telling me that Marra was having problems walking and that her speech was slurred. I left work to go see her and when I arrived she was unable to walk and could hardly talk. I thought she had a stroke and so carried her to the car with the help of my nephew so that she could be rushed to the hospital.
At the hospital, we found out that Marra did not have a stroke, but instead has several masses in her brain. After more than a week of waiting, it was determined that she has an infection in her brain that has caused her to lose control of the right side of her body. Since then, Marra has endured many painful tests and procedures to try to bring the infection under control. But, because of where they are located, they are very hard to treat.
Although Marra has shown improvement in the last couple days, she has a long road ahead of her. After more than 5 weeks in the hospital, with most of that being in pediatric intensive care, it is still still not known when she will be released. Even after she is, she will need to undergo extensive physical therapy to get back to her normal life.
On top of this, my sister Marlo has been unable to work since Marra was admitted to the hospital. As a single mother, she's been by Marra's bedside everyday to support her. But, the cost of Marra's ongoing treatment is tremendous and even with insurance, the bills are already a huge burden.
