JZ's Hope

Jon Zakary had two black-out episodes within a six month period;  was seen by a neurologist who noticed that the membrane behind his eye was not visible as she examined his vision.  She ordered an MRI which showed a thalamus mass. 

Further consultation lead to a stereotactic biopsy which occurred at LeBonheur Children's Hospital.  The tumor was diagnosed as a Grade II Infiltrated Astrocytoma and can not be removed as it is located in the central hemisphere of the brain.  Proton radiation therapy was ordered and is not offered to pediatrics within the state.  Therefore; we were referred to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. 

We travel to Memphis on Monday, April 16 and stay through the 19th for a pre-treatment work-up.  Jon Zakary will begin proton radiation therapy just three days shy of his fifteenth birthday.  During this time his mother will be his caretaker 100% of the time.  There will be lost wages as well as travel and medical expenses accrued.
