The morning of December 15, 2014 began like any other morning. Jessica Shipley loaded her girls into their van to begin their last week of school before Christmas break. At 8:13am, their lives were forever changed. They were hit broadside on the passenger side of their van by a driver who had run a stop sign. It was bad. Eight year old Chaylen took the brunt of the hit. Her nine year old sister Charis was so brave and thoughtful to make the important phone calls with her mom's phone. Jessica tended to Chaylen as she clung to life and she could only watch as five year old Emerie began to decline in the seat next to her sister.
Once the ambulances arrived, they immediately took Chaylen to the hospital while Jessica and the other girls remained at the scene until a second ambulance arrived. They were all rushed to the emergency room where Jessica had the agonizing task of leaving two of her daughters in the trauma bay while she boarded a helicopter with Chaylen to be life-line transported to Tampa General Hospital.
Chaylen was admitted to the ER at TGH with a severe concussion, multiple rib fractures, bruised lungs, a clavicle fracture, liver laceration and a banged up pancreas. Chaylen was admitted to the pediatric ICU. They spent 2 1/2 weeks in the hospital as she recovered. Chaylen was finally released from the hospital on New Years Eve. Though she is medically able to be out of the hospital, her concussion is still effecting her. She will soon return to school for 2 or 3 days a week, going for only half days to start. She is having some difficulty thinking and concentrating and she tires easily, which makes her unable to return to school full time. She has asked some questions to answers that she has known for some time, "how do I spell my name?" and has some confusion when looking at and writing numbers. We hope that this will decrease with time but right now, she is spending short periods of time at home doing homework and putting together puzzles to keep her brain active.
Jessica has handled the entire situation with strength and grace. She and her husband, Drew, spent 2 1/2 weeks sleeping in chairs next to their daughter's hospital bed, never leaving her side. Their positivity and calm have been infectious.
Unfortunately, Jessica has lost her job due to her need to be with her daughter. She has been out of work since December 15 and they are now facing eviction, overdrawn bank accounts and multiple other bills piling up. Anything you could donate would be greatly appreciated and would go to a family who wants nothing more than to nurse their daughter back to the smart, energetic, fun-loving girl that she has always been.
