It is with a heavy heart we feel it is time to share with you some heartbreaking news.

What began as rather mild symptoms, eventually escalated to the unfathomable. After several weeks and multiple incorrect opinions from different pediatricians, my sister finally received the order for her son to get necessary bloodwork. She just knew something was off.

On Saturday, June 22 our world stood still for a moment. After an abnormal blood test result, Sammy's parents were advised to rush him to the Emergency Room at Children's Hospital LA. He was instantly given a blood transfusion and within hours his parents, Andrea and Sam, were told the unthinkable -- their Sammy boy was diagnosed with leukemia and would begin chemo treatment immediately. It's still difficult to digest that my funny, smart, vivacious, creative, loving 9-year-old nephew has cancer. This boy’s bravery and resilience to the treatment has me humbled and awe-inspired.

Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed Sammy has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).  Although rare, ALL is the most common form of pediatric cancer. Thanks to incredible developments in modern medical practice, most of those children (nearly 90%) make a full recovery and live a healthy life. But no matter how high the success rates, it is a terrifying experience to learn that your child has been diagnosed with this disease and must undergo chemo treatments to be cured.

The Coverts are an asset to their community, always willing and ready to serve others. To say that they are the most loving and nurturing family is an understatement. Sammy has three younger siblings, Andrew (5), Miranda (2), and William (1) and my sister and Sam are doing everything they can to ensure they receive the best love and care they can during this challenging time. Many hospital visits/overnight stays lay ahead during this three-year treatment plan for Sammy's cure.   Positive thoughts, prayers, and energy are of utmost importance and very much needed and appreciated.

Many have asked how they could help. Relieving them of the financial pressures will allow them to prayerfully focus on the love and mutual support needed during treatment, healing and recovery. I know they would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
