Martinez Medical Fund

Dear Friends,

On August 11, 2017, my brother-in-law, Gilbert Martinez, husband and father of three young boys, went to the doctor for what he thought was a minor respiratory problem. To everyone's shock and horror, he soon found out that what he really had was a  life-threatening condition known as abdominal aortic aneurysm (triple A).  Gilbert's aorta had dissected from the top of his heart all the way into his pelvis. As a result of the aneurysm, his heart had also become damaged and enlarged.

Gilbert had an 8 hour surgery to repair the dissection on August 14.  During surgery, the doctor had to repair the aorta and replace a heart valve with a mechanical valve.  Gilbert required 4 blood transfusions due to uncontrolled bleeding, and for a while there, it looked like we might lose him. Fortunately the bleeding was stopped and the surgery was deemed successful.

Now that surgery is over, there is still a long road ahead for Gilbert, physically and financially. He is still in a tremendous amount of pain.  At this time, he is unable to walk unaided for even short distances. He can't lift anything greater than five pounds, including his own precious children. Needless to say, he is expected to be unable to return to work for several months. And, although he has health insurance, the copays for the long hospital stay and surgery will be several thousands of dollars. With medical bills and months of unemployment ahead, this medical condition is producing severe financial strain for Gilbert and his family.

Those who know Gilbert have always known him as an active, productive member of our community. He's an involved member of Grace North Church in Anthem and manages the chemistry lab at Gateway Community College. His wife, Ambre, is a former Boulder Creek HS teacher and now teaches French at Barry Goldwater HS. The children attend Gavilan Peak Elementary School.

This beautiful family has always looked for ways to serve their community, never asking for a thing. They would still feel uncomfortable asking... which is why, I myself, would like to ask you to consider helping them out with a donation of any size to help them out with medical bills and Gilbert's unemployment during recovery.  Any amount, no matter how large or small, would be a huge help to them at this time.  Prayers,  cards, and well wishes are also very welcome. Thank you so much for considering helping out this family, and for reading this and sharing with your friends! I will update the page as more information unfolds!

Sincerely,
Erin
