Like most Charities winter is always the hardest time of year. Especially as a farm animal charity.
As the cold, Mud and wet weather sets in our animals need to be in their stables or winter barns to keep warm and dry increasing the demand for straw, feed etc. This pushes our costs up massively especially as hay bales can be up to £70-80 with high demand at the moment because of the dry start to the year. We get through 10 a week at the moment! This doesn't include animal feed which is around £500 for a months supply for one species!
Our elderly animals also need extra feed, medication and supplements and vet care.
Our small team of volunteers work tirelessly to make sure all of our animals have everything they need, even giving out of their own pockets to try and support what we do. We are out morning and night whatever the weather, sometimes battling mud, frozen pipes and poo up to our knees to give the animals the life they deserve.
This year we have seen our lowest funds and a drop in standing orders.
Our hay barn is down to the last few rows which won't see us through to the end of December. Due to a dry year our usual supplier and kind supporters could not supply our usual winter reserves. This leaves us genuinely terrified on how we will afford the hay needed to get us through to spring when the animals should be able to return to the fields.
If you support our work and can give what you can to support our animals through the winter months it will mean the world to us all here at brook farm animal sanctuary this Christmas.
You can also support us by purchasing an animal sponsorship pack off our website for Christmas or by setting up a standing order.
