Recovering after Hurricane Harvey

Donation protected
Hello all,

Roshani Patel from Houston  here.  Let me start by sharing how amazed I am at the people of Houston and the love and support we have shown each other -- and especially all of the love and support we have gotten from our Slalom family. I can’t thank everyone enough for not just helping but showing us once again how strong we are a community and extended family.

Compared to so many, our damage was comparatively light. We had water come in through the chimney the last day and half of the storm and woke up to a few inches of water in the downstairs rooms. We lost a car.

My thinking was they have lost it all, my house and recovery can wait.

There were a lot of people that were evacuated/rescued to our area of town from surrounding areas that were under water and who had absolutely nothing. My neighbors and I received calls from churches turned shelters and other neighbors to see if we could spare anything for the first responders being housed at Ellington Field until they could get their supplies in. My neighbors and I got together and we started a caravan to get as much as we had in our homes to those that needed it right away.

Well, we met with the field adjustor from our insurance company and we're facing at least a couple of weeks for them to get to us and get us a determination on the damage. The carpets, drywall, and insulation are soaked and mildew is setting in.   We are trying to find out what we can do to get some of this out of the house, but we need help and almost every company we call is extremely busy. I am estimating the repairs to the house and car will be at least $40,000 (really rough estimate primarily cleanup crew and flooring not covered by insurance) in addition to the deductible.

Recovery is a long road, but I remind myself that it could be worse, and we have the support of some amazing people behind us and we are strong.

Thank you so much Slalom Family for your support and help. You are amazing. Colleagues who have helped me gather necessities the displaced and shelters are now are helping me with support that will directly go to the repair of our home for the damage from Harvey.  I can't tell you how much that means.
