Justin’s treatment for Auto-Brewery Syndrome

This is one of the most resilient men I have ever met. If he didn’t have bad luck he would have none, but he still smiles, he still is a father, a lover of animals and my rock.

He has an extremely rare condition which is called Auto Brewery Syndrome ABS. It is when carbohydrates, sugars, and fats get fermented in either the stomach or bowels creating ethanol in the blood. Essentially he gets drunk without sipping a drop of alcohol.

It started summer of last year.  He was on a high dose of antibiotics and we believe that that’s when the yeast in his system started to take over. He was acting intoxicated slurring his words, glazed eyes,  behaving oddly and quick to madden. I actually accused him of closet drinking because he smelled like a brewery.  With high levels of alcohol in his bloodstream, he is at risk for organ failure. We are getting to the point where this will start being an issue till he has treatment. It isn’t easy however, Once we figure out the yeast that is affecting him then we will be able to take an anti-fungal medication to lessen the effects. It’s possible to put it in remission.  The doctors want to try on many medications which if it is the wrong one will cause liver and kidney failure.

Here is is the problem:
Diet is only a part which can control some episodes, but he is having issues even when diet is controlled. Canada doesn’t do the tests we need to figure out what yeast it is, this was told by us by the GI doctor and infectious disease doctor. This is unacceptable to me.  There is the ability to find out what Yeast is in the system, if we go to the states. New York has 2 doctors specially trained we would like to see Dr Wick who has treated people successfully. This would not be a cheap trip.  Because it’s a pre-existing condition medical insurance will not cover us for treatment. They would rather have him go into organ failure and treat him in Canada then actually deal with the problem. Let’s not wait till that happens and we need your help. We are hoping with saving 1/2 of the funds needed maybe they would be willing to cover some of the costs.  We were told 130,000-150,000 will be needed.

I will post articles and webpages so many can read up on it.
