He’s Our Brother
Jay and I have created this page to help our youngest brother, Justin, who was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease) in May of 2019, at the age of 35. ALS is 100% fatal. There is currently no treatment or cure. On average, patients are given 2-5 years to live, but paralysis and loss of ability to speak and eat will come much sooner. ALS traps you inside your own body.
Needless to say, his world - and that of his wife Stacy and their 8 year-old daughter, Varen – came crashing down around him. Since then, he has spent his time making sure his family’s future needs are taken care of, and making memories with his family and friends. Now it’s our turn to make sure he has what he needs to live the best life possible for as long as he can.
Every day, Justin recites what he calls his ALS prayer. In short, he prays that he and everyone afflicted with this monster of a disease will be given access to promising therapies that have been proven effective but are stuck in the slow-moving FDA trial process. And he prays to live long enough to see it happen. His prayer has become ours, and I’m asking that you make it YOURS too!
The Cost of Living with ALS
The average cost to care for someone with ALS is between $250,000 and $300,000 per year.
As his condition worsens, he will no longer be able to work. Expenses for living with ALS include (but are not limited to):
• Medical expenses such as breathing assistance, feeding tube, clinic visits, etc.)
• Wheelchair
• Computerized speech assistance
• Home health care
• Wheelchair accessible vehicle
• Home adjustments to create a safe and accessible living space
• Clinical trial expenses: transportation, lodging, and meals are not covered for the required 15 trips to Los Angeles over a 12-month period
