<div>Im Februar 2019 starb der 22-jährige Rooble Warsame in Polizeigewahrsam in Schweinfurt, Bayern. Die offizielle Erklärung der Polizei lautet: Selbstmord. Doch bis heute bleiben grundlegende Fragen unbeantwortet:

<div><strong>Wer wir sind und was wir tun</strong>
</div>
<div>Wir sind eine kleine, ehrenamtliche Gruppe aus Verwandten, Freund*innen und Weggefährt*innen von Rooble aus Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA. Wir betreiben den Social-Media-Account @justice4rooble, organisieren Kundgebungen und Mahnwachen, nehmen an Solidaritätsveranstaltungen teil und koordinieren uns mit Journalist*innen und Anwält*innen – alles neben unseren regulären Jobs und stets mit minimalen Ressourcen.

<div>Seit 2019 arbeiten wir mit unserem Anwalt zusammen, um die Wahrheit aufzudecken. Im Jahr 2021 half unsere erste Spendenaktion dabei Rechtskosten zu decken. Dank einer Finanzierung durch die Bewegungsstiftung im Jahr 2024 begannen wir eine Zusammenarbeit mit unabhängigen forensischen Expert*innen und Journalist*innen des Recherche Zentrum e.V., die leider im Jahr 2025 endete. Diese Finanzierung half uns, Roobles Fall kurzzeitig zu untersuchen, aber das Geld ist mittlerweile fast aufgebraucht.

<div><strong>Warum wir deine/Ihre Unterstützung brauchen</strong>
</div>
<div>Die Ermittlungen dauern zwar noch an, aber wir wissen, dass der Kampf um die Wahrheit nicht vor Gericht endet. Am 1. März dieses Jahres haben wir die erste Kundgebung in Schweinfurt organisiert, um an Roobles Tod in Polizeigewahrsam zu erinnern. Wir versammelten uns mit Menschen aus ganz Deutschland und Roobles Familie aus Großbritannien und den USA, um zu zeigen, dass Roobles Tod nicht vergessen ist. Für uns als Roobles Familie war dies ein bedeutender Moment: Endlich hatten wir einen Raum, für den wir kämpfen mussten, um unsere Trauer und Wut zum Ausdruck zu bringen und sichtbare Solidarität zu erfahren. Es war auch ein wichtiger Schritt für unsere Kampagne: Es wurde unmissverständlich klar, dass Rooble nicht vergessen ist und dass wir weiterhin Druck ausüben werden!

<div><strong>Warum Todesfälle im Polizeigewahrsam Teil eines Systems sind </strong>
</div>
<div>Internationale Menschenrechtskonventionen verpflichten die Polizei, das Leben und die Würde aller Menschen zu schützen, die sich – zwangsweise – in Gewahrsam befinden. Wenn Menschen im Polizeigewahrsam sterben, ist der Staat dafür verantwortlich.
</div>
<div>Trotzdem sterben Menschen, die von strukturellen Diskriminierungen betroffen sind seit Jahrzehnten durch das Handeln - oder Nichthandeln - der Polizei. Zu oft werden diese Todesfälle vorschnell als Selbstmord, Unfall oder Einzelfall abgetan. Kritische Fragen bleiben unbeantwortet. Ermittlungen werden verzögert. Die Opfer und ihre Familien werden kriminalisiert und von den Medien und der Gesellschaft als Täter*innen dargestellt.

<div>Dieses System zeigt sich nicht nur bei der Ermordung von Rooble Warsame, sondern auch bei den Morden an Achidi John, Laye-Alama Condé, Oury Jalloh, Mouhamed Lamine Dramé, Halim Dener, Ferhat Mayouf, Slieman Hamade, Christy Schwundeck, Vitali Novacov, Najib Boubaker und mindestens 264 weiteren Opfern rassistischer Gewalt in Polizeigewahrsam in Deutschland, die von der Kampagne Death in Custody dokumentiert werden.

<div>Wenn Migration kriminalisiert und Abschiebegesetze verschärft werden, rassistische Faschist*innen weltweit in Machtpositionen sind, und Staaten Sozialstrukturen abbauen, während sie innen- und außenpolitisch aufrüsten, sind Geflüchtete und marginalisierte Gruppen leichte Zielscheibe für Gewalt– ohne Folgen für die Täter*innen.

<div><strong>JUSTICE FOR ROOBLE WARSAME - SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN!</strong>

<div>In February 2019, 22-year-old Rooble Warsame died in police custody in Schweinfurt, Bavaria. The police claim it was suicide — yet to this day, too many questions remain unanswered:

<div>We, Rooble’s family, friends, and community, do not believe this was a suicidal death. We believe in the truth – and we are fighting to bring it to light. Because one thing is clear: death in police custody is not an isolated incident.

<div><strong>Who we are and what we do</strong>
</div>
<div>We are a small, unpaid group made up of Rooble’s relatives, friends, and comrades across Germany, the UK, and the US. We run @justice4rooble on social media, organise rallies and vigils, attend solidarity events, and coordinate with journalists and lawyers — all alongside our day jobs, and always with minimal resources.

<div>Since 2019, we’ve been working with our lawyer to uncover the truth. In 2021, our first fundraiser helped cover legal costs. Thanks to funding from the Bewegungsstiftung in 2024, we began collaborating with independent forensic experts and journalists of Recherche Zentrum e.V., a collaboration which unfortunately broke down in 2025. This funding helped us to investigate Rooble’s case briefly – but that money has mostly been spent.

<div><strong>Why we need your support</strong>
</div>
<div>While the investigation is ongoing, we know the fight for truth doesn’t end in court. This year, on March 1st, we organised the first rally in Schweinfurt to remember Rooble’s death in police custody. We gathered with people from all over Germany, and Roobles family from the UK and the USA to show that Rooble’s death is not forgotten. For us as Rooble’s family, this was a significant moment: we finally had a space, one we had to fight for, to express our grief and anger and to experience visible solidarity. It was also an important step for our campaign: it made it unmistakably clear that Rooble has not been forgotten and that we will continue to apply pressure!

<div><strong>The systemic racism of deaths in custody </strong>
</div>
<div>International human rights conventions oblige the police to protect the life and dignity of everyone in their custody. When people die in police custody, the state is responsible. Yet, time and again, people affected by structural discrimination die due to the actions – or inactions – of the police. Too often, these deaths are hastily dismissed as suicide, accident, and an isolated case. Critical questions remain unanswered. Investigations are delayed. Victims and their families are criminalized and portrayed by the media and society as perpetrators.

<div>This system is evident not only in the murder of Rooble Warsame but also in the murders of Achidi John, Laye-Alama Condé, Oury Jalloh, Mouhamed Lamine Dramé, Halim Dener, Ferhat Mayouf, Slieman Hamade, Christy Schwundeck, Vitali Novacov, Najib Boubaker, and at least 264 other victims of racist violence in police custody in Germany, documented by the Death in Custody campaign.

<div>When migration is criminalized, deportation laws are tightened, while racist fascists hold positions of power worldwide, and states dismantle social structures while militarizing both domestic and foreign policies, refugees and marginalized groups become easy targets for violence – with no consequences for the perpetrators.
</div>

</div>
<div>The death of people in police custody is the ultimate consequence of a system that dehumanizes and disenfranchises Black people, migrants, queer people,dis-abled people, unhoused people, and those in psychological crises in order to carry out fascist policies at their expense. When the state refuses to take responsibility, we must take action.
