I have retained legal counsel and am respectfully requesting your support as I pursue co-conservatorship of my grandmother, Notie Hall, who is 89 years old and currently living with dementia.
My grandmother was recently hospitalized for approximately two and a half weeks due to a serious infection. During this time, serious concerns arose regarding decisions being made about her care and living arrangements. Two of her eight living adult children, who currently hold a durable Power of Attorney, are attempting to remove her from the home she has lived in for over 40 years and relocate her to a facility in another city. This proposal has been made without meaningful discussion with the family.
Medical professionals widely recognize that sudden relocation for elderly individuals with dementia, particularly removal from a familiar home environment, can cause confusion, emotional distress, and rapid health decline. For this reason, maintaining stability in her home environment is in her best interest whenever safely possible.
These two individuals have historically had no involvement in my grandmother’s daily care and well-being. They live approximately an hour and a half away and visit infrequently, sometimes only once every year or two. Aside from one of them occasional financial contributions for holiday or birthday gifts, they have not played an active role in meeting her day-to-day needs.
Since being discharged from the hospital, my grandmother has been walking with assistance, eating, communicating, and enjoying time with her family. At this time, there appears to be no immediate need to relocate her from the home where she feels safe, comfortable, and familiar.
For approximately the past ten years, my uncle and I have served as my grandmother’s primary caregivers. We have supported her daily needs, attended medical appointments with her, and ensured her overall well-being, especially after her dementia diagnosis. After my grandfather passed away, my uncle moved into the home so she would have constant support and supervision. Together, we have worked to provide a safe, stable, and loving environment so that she may remain in the home she knows and loves.
Our caregiving has never been motivated by financial gain. We have never received compensation for our time or efforts. We care for her out of love, respect, and gratitude for the life she has lived and the sacrifices she has made for our family.
Over the years, I have overseen my grandmother’s hygiene and have personally accompanied her to medical appointments, church services, community activities, and personal care visits, such as nail appointments. My uncle assists by preparing her meals and supporting her daily routine. I have maintained documentation of these visits, including photographs and records, which demonstrate the consistent care she has received. These efforts have contributed to maintaining her emotional well-being and sense of familiarity, which is especially important for individuals living with dementia.
My grandmother is a widowed Christian woman who has been a deeply respected member of our community for many years. She faithfully served as a choir director, lead singer, prayer band president, teacher, daycare owner, prayer line initiator, and was well known for many food dishes, especially her collard greens, salmon croquettes , and yams! She would cook greens once a week, for anyone that stopped by. She LOVED to feed and help people! Through her faith, generosity, and leadership, she has helped guide and inspire countless individuals. Many people know her as a compassionate woman who uplifted others and opened her home and heart to those in need.
My grandmother is the pillar and matriarch of our family. She has supported many, guided others in their faith, and given generously throughout her life. She deserves the dignity of remaining in the home she built with my grandfather for as long as it is safe and possible.
While this situation has been emotionally difficult, we are experiencing sleepless nights and a deep sense of disbelief and sadness regarding the path this has taken. Our primary focus remains on caring for my grandmother and protecting her well-being. I am committed to advocating for her comfort, stability, and dignity.
I am prepared to fight for my grandmother and provide documentation, medical records, photographs, and witness statements demonstrating the level of care and support my grandmother has received over the years.
Justice for Notie!
