Justice for Laid-Off Rewire.News Employees

Donation protected
Rewire.News, once the leading publication on reproductive health, rights, and justice, is laying off four more members of its union, including all of its remaining reporters. Since we notified management of our intent to unionize last August, Rewire.News has laid off nine union-eligible staff, and parted ways with a 10th. Three of those staff were members or alternates of our three-person bargaining committee, and two were notified of their layoffs within two days of participating in bargaining. Only one member of management has been laid off.

Once the current layoffs become effective on September 30, Rewire.News will have four vice presidents, but not a single person on staff with the title of reporter or researcher.

The Rewire.News union members being let go are immigration reporter Tina Vasquez, Northeast regional reporter Auditi Guha, investigative reporter Amy Littlefield, and legal researcher Brie Shea, who manages the Rewire.News legislative tracker. Together, we have produced ground-breaking coverage of Trump's assault on immigrants, reported on the lead crisis in Flint, investigated crisis pregnancy centers and religious hospitals, and monitored the unprecedented spread of anti-choice legislation nationwide. Management says these remaining reporting and researching positions are not "mission-critical" or "core" to the function of Rewire.News. We disagree. In fact, at this critical moment in the movement for immigrant and reproductive rights, our reporting and research is more necessary than ever before.

Please help us fundraise for our laid-off colleagues who are being denied a fair severance package!
