The Fight Continues for “Justice for Chanel Hines”

Donation protected
Funds will be used to pay for expenses related to extensive medical care, reconstructive surgeries, rallies and vigils in support of Chanel, advocate services, travel, and potential bail if one is at any point offered for her release.

On Tuesday November 3rd, Chanel Hines, a Black transwoman, was shot by her parole officer in Canandaigua, NY. According to witnesses, Chanel was backing away from her PO in her car when he shot seven times through the windshield, hitting Chanel five times. Chanel was eventually airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where she underwent 3 emergency surgeries. She has lost half her lung, is at least temporarily blind in one eye, and lost the use of her arm and hand. Chanel has since been transferred to the medical center at Wende Correctional Facility. She is listed as a “detainee” by the Department of Corrections in a maximum security all-male inmate facility, but criminal charges have yet to be filed. She has been denied visits and packages for the entirety of her stay in the hospital and now in the prison facility as well. For much of this time she was also denied any phone or confidential attorney contact as well.

Despite all of the adversity she has faced, Chanel has been drawing strength from the knowledge that her community is behind her. Hearing how much support she has and how much the LGBTQ+ community is showing up for her has helped completely change her mood and get her up out of bed on days when she otherwise felt discouraged. Generous donors have contributed to a legal fund created to aid Chanel in her defense as well as in her pursuit of justice and freedom and her family is so incredibly grateful for all the support they have received. There has been significant progress and victories, but the fight has only just begun. Chanel has a long, hard road ahead of her, but with the support of her family, friends, and even strangers, we have faith that battles will continue to be won. Please donate to support Chanel in this time of crisis.
