<div><strong>JUSTIÇA POR CLÁUDIA SIMÕES: CONTRA O RACISMO SISTÊMICO E INSTITUCIONAL EM PORTUGAL.</strong>

<div>Cláudia Simões poderia ser apenas mais uma mulher negra em Portugal, mas desde Janeiro de 2020 é também o rosto da violência policial racista. O processo arrasta-se há mais de quatro anos e esta campanha serve para recolher fundos que possam ajudá-la a continuar com o seu, moroso, processo na justiça.

<div>Mas voltemos ao início. A Cláudia, como muitas mulheres que vivem fora dos grandes centros urbanos, depende dos transportes públicos para poder trabalhar. A 19 de Janeiro de 2020 aquilo que deveria ter sido apenas mais uma viagem de autocarro com a sua filha de oito anos, acabou por transformar a Claúdia e o seu rosto espancado no retrato de mais um caso de violência polícia, onde são evidentes as motivações raciais.

<div>A Claúdia foi brutalmente espancada em frente à sua filha - isto por si só tem demasiadas camadas de violência e trauma mas as agressões continuaram no carro da polícia ao ponto da Claúdia precisar de ser encaminhada para o Hospital Amadora-Sintra. No entanto, os ataques sobre a Claúdia não acabaram nesse dia. A violência psicológica, e moral têm na acompanhado tanto dentro das instituições judiciais que se dizem imparciais, como fora por parte de uma opinião pública que reflete o racismo sistêmico em Portugal.

<div>O julgamento começou em Março de 2020 no Tribunal da Amadora. Em Novembro do mesmo ano a Claúdia foi condenada a um ano e três meses de prisão com pena suspensa pelos crimes de “resistência e coação sobre funcionário” e “injúrias agravadas”. O policia Carlos Canhas foi absolvido de todas as acusações de ofensa à integridade física qualificada. A Claúdia recorreu. Passaram-se dois anos, com várias sessões que a 1 de Julho de 2024 culminam novamente na condenação da Cláudia a uma pena suspensa de oito meses de prisão por “ofensa à integridade física qualificada” - que se traduz no facto de ela ter mordido a mão do polícia enquanto este a sufocava. Do outro lado, o agente Carlos Canhas foi condenado a três anos de prisão, também com pena suspensa, por agressões e sequestro de Quintino Gomes e Ricardo Botelho, mas foi novamente absolvido de todas as acusações de agressão à Cláudia.

<div>Em contra-corrente uma onda de solidariedade ocupou as ruas de Lisboa com diversos protestos pedindo justiça para a Claúdia e para todas as vítimas de racismo e violência policial. A Claúdia está longe de ser o primeiro caso de violência racista em Portugal e infelizmente não será o último. É também por isso que a luta da Claúdia diz respeito a todos os que querem um país mais justo.

<div><strong>JUSTICE FOR CLAÚDIA SIMÕES: AGAINST SYSTEMIC AND INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN PORTUGAL</strong>

<div>Cláudia Simões could have been just another black woman in Portugal, but since January 2020, she is also the face of racist police violence. The legal process has dragged on for more than four years, and this campaign aims to raise funds to help her continue her lengthy, legal battle.
</div>

<div>Let's go back to the beginning. Like many women living outside major urban centers, Cláudia depends on public transportation. On January 19, 2020, what should have been just another bus ride with her eight-year-old daughter, ended with Cláudia's battered face becoming the portrait of yet another case of racially motivated police violence.

<div>Police brutally beat Cláudia in front of her daughter — The assaults continued in the police car, to such an extent that Cláudia needed to be taken to Amadora-Sintra Hospital. However, the attacks on Cláudia did not end that day. She has continued to face psychological and moral violence, both within the judicial institutions and from a percentage of the public that reflects systemic racism in Portugal.

<div>The trial began in March 2020 at the Amadora Court. In November of the same year, Cláudia received a suspended 15-month sentence for the crimes of "resistance and coercion against an official" and "aggravated insults." Meanwhile, her aggressor, Officer Carlos Canhas, who viciously attacked Claudi and attempted to strangle her, was acquitted of all charges of grievous bodily harm.

<div>Cláudia pursued her appeal for two years Finally, on July 1, 2024, Cláudia received an additional eight-month suspended prison term for "grievous bodily harm" – for biting Officer Canhas' hand, while he was choking her. Officer Canhas received a three-year suspended prison sentence for the assault and kidnapping of Quintino Gomes e Ricardo Botelho but was declared innocent of assaulting Claúdia

<div>During this process, a wave of solidarity filled the streets of Lisbon, with various protests demanding justice for Cláudia, as well as for all victims of racism and police violence. Cláudia is far from being the first case of racist violence in Portugal and, unfortunately, is unlikely to be the last. Therefore, Cláudia's fight concerns all those who want to create a more just society in Portugal.
