<div>Mi nombre es Rodrigo Solarte y desde el 6 de enero de 2023 mi esposa Alexandra Sánchez y yo estamos enfrentando la batalla más dura de nuestras vidas: Cáncer de pulmón.

<div>Ese día le fue diagnosticado en su pulmón derecho. El 25 de febrero le realizaron Neumonectomía (Cirugía realizada para extirpar completamente el pulmón derecho) y recibió 4 ciclos de quimioterapia preventiva con cisplatino, que terminaron el 30 de junio. Parecía que lo habíamos superado, pero en octubre del mismo año, en sus controles, aparecieron 12 nódulos en su único pulmón restante.

<div>Una nueva biopsia confirmó que era el mismo tipo de cáncer, mi esposa había tenido metástasis a su único pulmón. En enero de 2024 iniciamos nuevamente quimioterapia (recibió 15 ciclos), pero en noviembre los exámenes mostraron que los nódulos habían crecido. La enfermedad seguía avanzando, y los médicos nos informaron que ya no quedaban opciones de tratamiento en Colombia.

<div>El tipo de cáncer que enfrenta mi esposa es poco común, muy agresivo, y suele aparecer en personas mayores con antecedentes de tabaquismo. Ella es joven, sin antecedentes y nunca ha fumado.

<div>En medio del dolor y la incertidumbre, buscamos una nueva esperanza. Viajamos a Estados Unidos en 2024, inicialmente por una pastilla sugerida en Colombia, pero descubrimos que no era compatible con su tipo de cáncer. Quedó abierta una puerta: un tratamiento experimental en EE. UU. si la enfermedad progresaba.

<div>En diciembre de 2024 comenzamos ese camino, viajando cada 15 días durante el primer trimestre de este año. Ese primer tratamiento no funcionó. Pero el 23 de marzo comenzamos un nuevo tratamiento experimental, esta vez con una quimioterapia dirigida.

<div>Este tratamiento hace parte de un estudio clínico, lo que significa que el hospital proporciona el medicamento. Sin embargo, nosotros debemos asumir todos los demás gastos:
</div>
<div>•	Controles médicos regulares (como cualquier paciente en quimioterapia)

<div>•	Exámenes de sangre y de seguimiento
</div>
<div>•	Transporte aéreo 
</div>
<div>•	Estadía
</div>
<div>•	Alimentación

<div>Para cumplir con el protocolo del estudio, debemos permanecer en EE. UU. durante varias semanas. El 16 de mayo recibimos una gran noticia: los nódulos han empezado a reducirse. ¡El tratamiento está funcionando!

<div>Hasta este momento, hemos sostenido esta lucha, gracias a nuestros ahorros, a la generosa ayuda de familiares y amigos cercanos, y también a través de préstamos personales y tarjetas de crédito. Sin embargo, estos recursos ya se están agotando, y continuar con el tratamiento en el extranjero a pesar de los buenos resultados, es muy difícil sin apoyo adicional.

<div>My name is Rodrigo Solarte, and since January 6, 2023, my wife, Alexandra Sánchez, and I have been facing the hardest battle of our lives: lung cancer.
</div>

<div>That day, she was diagnosed with cancer in her right lung. On February 25, she underwent a pneumonectomy (surgery to completely remove the right lung) and received four cycles of preventive chemotherapy with cisplatin, which ended on June 30. It seemed like we had overcome it, but in October of the same year, during a follow-up check, 12 nodules appeared in her only remaining lung.

<div>A new biopsy confirmed it was the same type of cancer—my wife had metastasis in her only lung. In January 2024, we began chemotherapy again (she received 15 cycles), but by November, tests showed that the nodules had grown. The disease was still progressing, and doctors informed us that there were no remaining treatment options in Colombia.

<div>The type of cancer my wife is facing is rare, very aggressive, and usually found in older individuals with a history of smoking. She is young, has no such history, and has never smoked.
</div>
<div>Amid the pain and uncertainty, we searched for new hope. We traveled to the United States in 2024, initially for a pill that had been suggested in Colombia, but we discovered it wasn’t compatible with her type of cancer. One door remained open: an experimental treatment in the U.S. if the disease progressed.

<div>In December 2024, we began that journey, traveling every 15 days during the first quarter of this year. That first treatment didn’t work. But on March 23, we started a new experimental treatment, this time with targeted chemotherapy.
</div>

<div>This treatment is part of a clinical study, which means the hospital provides the medication. However, we must cover all the other expenses ourselves:

</div>

<div>To comply with the study protocol, we must remain in the U.S. for several weeks. On May 16, we received great news: the nodules have started to shrink. The treatment is working!

<div>Until now, we’ve sustained this fight thanks to our savings, the generous help of close friends and family, and also through personal loans and credit cards. However, those resources are now running out. Continuing treatment abroad, despite the positive results, is becoming very difficult without additional support.
