Juneau's Rainbow Crosswalk

Juneau! Thanks for your patience. We have city approval to paint a RAINBOW CROSSWALK downtown at Front & Main. Our fundraising goal is $10,000 - as soon as we hit it, we can get started painting! Can we do it in two weeks? Show some love for rainbows, inclusion and public art today! Any amount helps whether it's $5 or $500. JAHC will be the fiscal agent for this project - so your donations are even tax deductible. Donations will pay for the city's approved painting contractor to install the crosswalk & keep it looking good for the next couple of years.
More details and history of this exciting project are below! Please donate today!

Purpose
Rainbow Crosswalk Working Group
There is a real public benefit to the City and Borough of Juneau having rainbow crosswalks. Juneau prides itself on being a welcoming community and rainbow crosswalks have come to symbolize the equality and the inclusion of all people. A rainbow crosswalk has been  proposed in Juneau to demonstrate the community’s acceptance and welcoming stance for all people, regardless of race, color, age, religion, sex, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or national origin, as per our Equal Rights Ordinance. There is also strong interest throughout the community in having color and art in the downtown area and rainbow crosswalks bring vibrant color to our streets.

Background
In the spring of 2018 rainbow crosswalks were painted without city authorization, covered up by the city maintenance to comply with traffic safety standards and then repainted, again without city authorization. The issue became heated and the City Manager invited citizens interested in having rainbow crosswalks to form a group to work with the city on the subject. A workgroup was formed, and they developed a proposal for a pilot project to establish a rainbow crosswalk in the downtown corridor. The proposal was submitted to the City Manager in October 2018. The proposal was based on standards and practices used in other communities with successful rainbow crosswalk projects. The location of this crosswalk with be the intersection of Main and Front streets

The working group needs to raise enough money to maintain the crosswalk for three years, as it will likely need to be repainted annually. The working group is very excited that the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council (JAHC) will serve as fiscal agents, to enable the working group to begin fundraising to complete this project. $10,000 is the fundraising goal for the first three years for installation of maintenance  of this pilot project.
