The family of Juliet Thompson is imploring your help. A LETTER FROM HER HUSBAND!!! I am writing this message on behalf of my wife who is currently hospitalised in the University Hospital of the West Indies and also on behalf of my family. My wife became ill in mid-October 2017 and since then she has been hospitalised three times and has done four surgeries with a major one pending. The dates of hospitalisation are as follows: Nov 11- 21, 2017, Dec. 11 - Jan 11, 2018, Jan 23 - Present Time. She was first diagnosed with a gluteal abscess on her left leg which resulted in her developing Obstructive Jaundice which was successfully treated. As a consequence of the gluteal abscess, inflammatory cells travelled down to her prosthetic hip on her left side and caused it to become infected. The doctors have since removed the infected implant and have started her on a course of antibiotics to rid the area of infection so that a new revision prosthesis can be installed. My wife remains hospitalised as her mobility has been severely compromised. Additionally she is being treated with antibiotics which are only available in the intravenous formation. Thirdly, she remains in hospital because subsequent surgeries have revealed that in addition to the complications resulting from the infection of the prosthesis, there is significant degradation of the bone structure surrounding the prosthetic hip. All together the above mentioned issues have resulted in her being in a virtually unbroken stay in the hospital until a new revision prosthesis is fitted. Consequently, the team of doctors have advised us that the following items will be needed to restore my wife to full mobility: Acetabular Cage, Revision Implants-Total Hip, and Femoral Graph. The total cost is $2,606,515.52. Separate from what our insurance will assist with financially, there are other significant out of pocket cost associated with this lengthy period of hospitalization which includes cost incurred as a result of drugs and laboratory benefits being exhausted. Additionally, the cost of specialised items required by the doctors and the general expenses associated with having a family member hospitalised have put tremendous strain on the family’s financial resources. As such, we are severely challenged to find the funds to cover the expenses of hospitalization and the five surgeries, four (4 ) of which have been done with the major one to come - that being, the total hip replacement. With this in mind we are kindly asking for your assistance in meeting these expenses, especially that associated with the cost of the prosthesis as per estimate. Thanks in advance.
