Hey. I'm Julie Muncy. I'm an online writer, specializing in videogames and technology, and I'm also a trans woman in the middle of her transition. And I need some help.
I suffer from a degenerative dental illness. For a very long time--as long as I can remember--my teeth have been falling apart. The reasons for this are varied, but they include genetics (two generations before me have had similar problems) and poverty, which kept me from getting proper dental care as a kid. I'm embarking on a long, painful process to fix this problem.
As of writing this, I've completed the first step in the process. All of my teeth have been surgically removed, and I have dentures. But that's only the first step. The goal of my treatment is to receive a full set of dental implants, fixed false teeth that replicate almost 100% the functionality and comfort of normal teeth. Implants are now considered the best, most functional dental replacement option. Dentures can cause gradual degredation of the jawbone, often break, and can leave gums open to irritation and infection--infection that can travel easily from the gums to the heart. Not to mention the significant social stigma that goes along with having dentures in the first place.
However, virtually no insurance in the United States covers dental implants, and they're not cheap. So I'm asking for your help. My goal here is the cost of one of two required sets of dental implants--the whole top or bottom of my mouth. I've already spent the vast majority of my savings on the initial surgery, and saving the necessary money as a writer (while also dealing with life expenses and the medical costs of gender transition) is going to take a very long time, time during which my jawbone could further degrade, making the later implanatation process more difficult. Cutting that cost in half would change my life. Getting dental implants would also help me do better work; it would empower me to engage more heavily in podcasting, streaming, and speaking engagements.
So I'm asking you to donate if you can, and share this if you can't. It would absolutely mean the world to me. If by some miracle my $15,000 goal is reached, and there's still interest, I'll increase the goal to the full $30,000. Any money given me will go straight to my dental costs.
