Hello, and welcome to my go fund me page!
My name is Julie Vasquez. I live in Cambria, California and am currently a sophomore at Coast Union High School.
This is a campaign to help me raise money to study abroad through the American Field Service (AFS), a non-profit organization that offers intercultural learning experiences through studying abroad.
I am hoping to embark on this adventure in Japan the first semester of my junior year in 2018.
Why Japan? I have always been very interested in its customs and culture and would really like to fully immerse myself in it. I would also love to learn a third language and think this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. I have been studying Japanese for about 6 months already. I believe going abroad would definitely help me learn and strengthen those skills.
Most importantly, though, I hope to share the American culture with my Japanese host family, school, and community. On my return, I want to continue the vision of AFS to foster peace and understanding through student exchange and share my experiences with my peers and community.
I do not know what I would like to be when I grow up just yet, but I do know that I would like to work in the technology industry. Because Japan is believed to be one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, I am hoping that this trip will give me a broader view of the place technology has in another country.
The cost for this trip is $13,800, plus expenses (e.g. uniform, travel, meals).
I’m the only Coast Union student embarking on a foreign exchange program next year and I am thrilled about it. Currently our town has one foreign exchange student, Holly McHaffie, studying in Spain. Pryor to her adventure, it had been seven years since Coast Union sent someone on an AFS program. I want to continue the trend that Holly established. I hope that other students will think about what they want to learn and where they might go to learn it.
My goal is to proudly represent my country, my school and Cambria, while I live and study in Japan. I will be extremely grateful for any donation that I receive.
