Muchisimas gracias.

English:

Julia Sierra moved to the United States from Cuba in 1969 to afford her family with greater opportunity. At 38-years-old, she was a widow, and found strength to emigrate to San Francisco bearing only one suitcase and her three children. She always said that she was guided by her enormous sense of faith, which ultimately led her to first be a part of St. Anthony's Parish, and later Our Lady of the Rosary. While she spent most of her time in the United States being a caretaker for her family, her unconditional love and sacrifice allowed her three children to receive an education and become very successful in their respective careers. Her four grandchildren continued on to do the same, as they were all able to pursue a college education and are now on the paths to fulfilling their dreams and goals in their careers.

Because Julia came from a modest family in Cuba, she was only able to attend school until the sixth grade. She dreamt of someday being a nurse, but spent the majority of her life there working as a seamstress at a men's clothing factory. Though she was not able to continue on with her formal education, she always made a continuous effort to keep learning. She was an avid reader, quilter, and chef.

Since she moved to the United States, she persistently motivated her children and grandchildren to pursue an education; excel at school; and work hard, no matter what the circumstances. Her resilience and positive attitude propelled us all, and the Julia Sierra Memorial Scholarship Fund intends to do the same. In honor of Julia, we'd like to formally establish a scholarship opportunity for children of single immigrant mothers who are a part of St. Anthony's parish or Our Lady of the Rosary church.

The first step to making this a reality is receiving your donation. We'd like to suggest that you help us, in lieu of flowers, and in loving memory of Abuelita, Mima, or Julia Sierra. You can do so by clicking the link below, anything you can offer is greatly appreciated by the entire family.
