Julia’s Public Health Service Trip to Honduras

Hi friends and family!
As the first semester of my junior year of college comes to a close (insanity), I have a couple of things I’d love to share with you all.
This year I officially started classes in my major of Environmental Health Sciences at UNC’s public health school. It’s daunting for anyone to secure themselves into their major, but I can honestly say that these past few months have been the most riveting and inspiring time I’ve ever had. I’ve never felt more passionate and sure about my career path, and I’m beyond excited for what’s ahead.
That being said, I’ve found that a large chunk of my career interest (global poverty and global development, for example) is comprised of realities I’ve never truly seen. This winter break, the day after turning 21 years old to be exact, I’ll have the opportunity to change that by going to rural Honduras on a public health service trip with UNC Global Brigades. There we’ll spend 7 days working with community leaders to build sanitation stations (check out the photos in the first comments of my post on Facebook - courtesy of a UNC GB presentation), that allow for the sanitary disposal of waste, as well as the proper storage of clean water for cooking and hygiene. This progress is huge for these families living off of less than $3 per day. We’ll also have an entire day dedicated to going to local primary schools and sharing health and disease prevention practices such as tooth-brushing and hand-washing with the kids. This is all with the ultimate goal of empowering the communities to continue these practices indefinitely, without our help.
These trips have been successful and safe since 2004, thoroughly planned for travel, project resources, interpreters, and security, thanks to an established and ongoing relationship with the community leaders in Honduras. With savings and the restaurant work I’ll be doing over this Thanksgiving and Christmas break I hope to be able to cover a lot of the cost of the trip on my own, but I was also hoping to fundraise a bit, as the total cost will be around $2,200.
Any type of support from you all is more than meaningful to me, so thank you so much. A special thank you to Jamie (mom☺️) and my dad for supporting me and being there for me in ways that will forever make me confused about how I got so lucky :)
