Juliana: 1st Costa Rican on eXXpedition!

My name is Juliana, I was born and raised in Costa Rica, a small but a very biodiverse country. I’ve inevitably been in very close interaction with the ocean and this has deeply influenced my personal and professional life. As a professional in the field of design and creativity, diver and conservationist, I’ve oriented my life to positively influence human behaviour for the conservation and sustainable use of our oceans.
We are currently going through a global environmental crisis; 8 million tonnes of plastic waste find their way into the ocean each year (Dr Jenna Jambeck) and only 9% of plastic waste being recycled globally. But thankfully there are people working together to change this reality.
I was given the opportunity to be part of that challenge by being the first Costa Rican to join eXXpedition’s first Round the World 2019-2021 voyage! My goal is to support Costa Rica’s national mission to be single-use plastic free by 2021, by using the knowledge gained through exxpedition into the creation of awareness-raising materials, interactive campaigns, and/or artistic pieces in order to reduce our plastic footprint and inspire others.
I believe that by uniting creativity with ocean conservation and science, we can shift perceptions and instigate positive change.
To make the expedition possible, each crew member must contribute to the cost of the voyage, travel, insurance and accommodation. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

eXXpedition’s mission is to assemble multidisciplinary all-female crews for sailing expeditions in locations around the world to conduct citizen science, complete local outreach and explore solutions to ocean plastic.
