Help for Jules Walker Renney Burn Recovery

Donation protected
On March 19, 2019, a parent's worst nightmare occurred to our good friends Kate Walker and Trevor Renney. Their 3 year old son Jules was helping his mom make dinner when his chair slipped and an entire pot of hot soup was accidentally pulled off the stove, onto his little body.  Jules suffered burns to his face, neck, torso and his arms.  He was immediately rushed to BC Children’s Hospital where he continues to grapple with his devastating injuries. We recently learned that 21% of his tiny body has been affected with mostly 3rd degree burns. We are at the beginning of a difficult journey.  He will require numerous skin grafts, a painful surgical procedure for anyone to bear, let alone a 3 year old boy.  The recovery process will be measured in years, rather than months.

We all know and love Jules’ parents, Kate Walker and Trevor Renney. We know them for their generosity of spirit and the love they give to everyone around them. We know them for what amazing, loving, nurturing, and fun parents they are. This makes watching them endure the pain of this event all the more difficult.

Both Kate and Trevor are contract reality TV writers. It is likely that one or both of them will need to take a lot of time off to care for Jules as he goes through the process of healing. We don’t yet fully know what this will involve, but at the very least it will be months of one-on-one care and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, the TV business does not provide benefits or sick pay. The last thing any of us want is for Kate and Trevor to have financial stress in addition to all they are going through. We also know that everyone in the community wants to do something, wants to help in some way, so we are setting up this GoFundMe page.

Jules is a sweet spirited, funny, ferocious, determined and strong little boy. He is being so brave in the face of this excruciating pain and adversity. So are his parents and we want to ensure they don't have to stress or worry about anything financial over the next many months.

Kate shared part of their day on Instagram. "So, the news this morning wasn’t what we hoped for. Most of the burns are 3rd degree, he will need surgery and grafts on his chest, arms, and possibly some other locations. The plastic surgeons will take healthy skin from his thighs for the grafts. For now, they’re giving him 2 weeks to heal as much as possible, with burn baths and redressing twice a week. This is the beginning of a long healing journey, possibly an ongoing thing we’ll have to manage as he grows. The grief and sadness that welled up when I heard this news today was the biggest I have ever felt. It knocked the wind out of me. I couldn’t stand. The nightmarish moment replayed in my mind, my body ached to turn back time. Trev and I cried all our tears out. And then, when our little warrior prince was wheeled back from his procedure, he looked at us with tears in his eyes and we needed to be positive, strong, encouraging and loving as possible, because that’s what he needs from us, and it’s practically the only thing we can do for him. Just love him so hard, tell him how amazing he is, and never leave his bedside chair empty. I think that’s one thing that’s so intense about this experience, to dig deep to be a pilar of love and strength and hope, but the pain still wells up, so when I have a moment, I cry. I beg for mercy. I don’t feel strong enough for this, but I see Jules and what he’s going through, I see him fighting to live, accepting what he has to do, and just being soooo so so brave. And I have to do the same. Still praying for as much healing as possible over these two weeks, will keep you all posted. Thank you again for your support. "
