Jude’s Plagiocephaly treatment

Our baby boy Jude was diagnosed with Plagiocephaly (a form of flat head syndrome) at birth. He was born prematurely meaning that he missed out on those vital weeks in the womb to give his bones the density they needed, which means Judes skull plates were significantly softer than a baby born at full term. This has left him vulnerable to these conditions - despite all the repositional therapy we have been consistently doing. 

Plagiocephaly wasn’t something we’d ever heard of until Jude was born and were told by NHS health professionals that it would correct itself by around 6 months of age. Flat head syndrome is common and research shows babies with mild measurements can improve on their own with repositional therapy. After attending a private clinic to get Judes head measured he falls in to the severe category for Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly.

For Plagiocephaly, the range is between 0 and 6mm for ‘normal’ head shape - Jude is measuring at 20mm.

For Brachycephaly this measurement goes by percentages and the normal percentage is between 73 and 83% and judes measuring at 97%.

This diagnosis means we will need a correction helmet for Jude’s head shape to improve before his skull plates form together. Sadly, the NHS don’t fund this and the cost of Helmet therapy is between £2,000 and £3,000.
