This is the heartbreaking story of an extraordinary young man who set out on his own to a new country, with the dream of finding economic stability for his family back home in Mexico. But he eventually learned that he has terminal cancer, and now alone and ailing in a new world, his one wish is to return to his mother’s arms.
Juan and his eight siblings were raised in the town of San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico by a hardworking mother who tirelessly worked multiple jobs to provide for her children. At the age of 19, alone but full of hope, Juan moved to the United States to find stability for his mother and siblings back home. For two years, he worked a back-breaking job in a marble finishing factory, and faithfully sent money home to help support his family. When Juan heaved slabs of marble, he daydreamed of one day building a house for his family with those materials. He hoped to go to school to learn the skills for a stable career, and “have my mother fulfill her dreams, because she worked so very hard for us.”
One month ago, at the age of 22, he learned that he has advanced metastatic cancer. His mother’s visa to come to America to care for her dying son has been denied. He has spent much of the last month in the hospital, and is now too ill to receive life prolonging treatment. Frail and quickly ailing, he is transitioning to hospice care and now has a short window of time when he will be physically capable of travelling back home to Mexico to reunite with his beloved mother, and to live his last days surrounded by those he loves.
For all those who have the privilege of knowing him, he has come to be known as a gentle, loving soul. He never asked for help, but all those around him have been touched by his remarkable story of sacrifice and love, and hope to fulfill his last wish to see his mother and family once more.

Funds raised here will pay for airfare and travel back to Juan’s home, as well as hospice care expenses in Mexico. Any remaining funds will fulfill his wish to bring his family out of debt.
Esta es la conmovedora historia de Juan, un joven mexicano que llegó solo a los Estados Unidos queriendo trabajar para así poder ayudar a su familia en México. Hace un mes Juan llegó a saber que está en la última etapa de un cáncer al colon. En Estados Unidos Juan no tiene a nadie y con esta sentencia de muerte, su único deseo es de regresar a su tierra natal para morir en los brazos de su madre.
Juan y sus ocho hermanos son de San Luis de la Paz en Guanajuato, México. Su madre es una mujer muy trabajadora y tiene múltiples trabajos para mantener a sus hijos. A los diecinueve años de edad Juan ya se sentía responsable por ayudar a su familia a salir de esa pobreza tan abyecta, por eso se arriesgó y viajó a este país en busca de trabajo. Por dos años trabajó en una fábrica, haciendo una de las labores más pesadas, levantando planchas de mármol. Nunca dejó Juan de enviar dinero para su madre y hermanos y vivió acariciando el sueño de ir algún día a la escuela para aprender un oficio que mejor le permitiera ayudar a los suyos. Hace un mes, después de haber ignorado síntomas dolorosos por muchos meses para así no arriesgarse a perder su trabajo, Juan se enteró que a sus 22 años de edad está en la última etapa de un cáncer metastásico al colon. A su madre le han negado la visa para entrar a los Estados Unidos a cuidar de su hijo moribundo. Juan ha estado internado en el hospital casi todo el mes, pero ahora ya está demasiado enfermo para recibir tratamiento médico, está muy frágil y su deterioro avanza rápidamente. Ahora ya está bajo los cuidados de un hospicio y le quedan poquísimas fuerzas para todavía poder hacer el viaje a México, reunirse con su amada madre, y morir rodeado de los que lo aman.
Todos aquellos que hemos tenido el privilegio de cuidar de Juan en el hospital lo conocemos como un alma dulce y cariñosa, y hemos quedado muy conmovidos por su historia de sacrificio y amor filial. Juan nunca ha pedido ayuda. Somos nosotros, los que lo rodeamos y conocemos su historia quienes fervientemente deseamos que su último deseo se haga realidad y Juan pueda ver a su familia una última vez.
