Tommy (Thomas) Hamilton, age 39, husband to Michelle for 20 years and father to Laci 11 and Landon 8 (who is autistic).
On Sept. 5, 2014, Tommy’s wife took him to the ER for confusion and a bad headache. He was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann in Houston, as they were unsure of his diagnosis. They were acting on precaution due to his previous aorta dissection in July 2011. At Hermann Hospital, he was treated with antibiotics and antivirals for what appeared to be an infection (meningitis, encephalitis, West Nile).
Eight days later, while still in the hospital, he had a seizure and his blood pressure went over 200. He had a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a cerebral aneurysm, and an intracerebral bleed. The neurosurgeon had to perform a craniotomy on him to relieve the pressure of his brain from the swelling that was caused by the bleed. The neurosurgeon stated that Tommy had a traumatic brain injury and severe bleeding. He also stated that Tommy may never walk, talk, or swallow again, since the extensive damage was on the left side of his brain. Tommy was in a coma for almost 2 months and has been in a persistent vegetative state since the last week of October.
He has a feeding tube, periodically opens his eyes, but shows no signs of recognition. He can not move anything, except his left arm, but it moves sporadically. At this time, he does not follow any commands or participate in any therapy.
With all this being said, times are getting tougher for his family, with mounting medical costs. Tommy was terminated from his job, therefore his insurance ended. An individual insurance policy has been taken out for him, with a huge cost. His wife is overwhelmed with everything concerning her husband (mentally, physically and financially), and also trying to keep up with everything at home and with the kids, while trying to be with him too.
This fund has been set up to help relieve some of the financial burden Michelle and the children are under.
