The Titlewave Library for Kids

Getting my students to read is not a problem, getting them enough books is!

With limited funding from the school and my own pocket, we have been able to get some great young-adult literature into our classroom at Columbus Family Academy in New Haven, CT. My kids have jumped at John Green titles, Divergent and Maze Runner series, and others, eagerly discussing and reading them voraciously at home. They discuss books in the lunchroom, and stay afterschool for hours voluntarily to read!

One of our afterschool book clubs led us to meet the author of My Beloved World, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor:

But we do not have enough books.

We want to create a truly outstanding classroom library with over $2000 worth of the best of market young adult literature and non-fiction, along with $500 of comfortable bean bags and sturdy bookshelves to complete the library! This will ensure that each and every student has enough material to indepedently read between twenty and forty titles a year in our classroom!

Funds will be used to purchase a wealth of quality, high interest young adult books at a wide range of reading levels  and topics so that not a single reader is left out. Titles have been selected from Newberry Award Winners and honor titles  from 1922- present, National Book Award winners and finalists in the Young Adult category, YALA best books for young adults, C-T-L.org's recommended titles for young adults and highschool students, Pura Belpre Award winners, CCSS recommended texts, as well as from our student - created wishlist of titles.

The goal of the classroom library is to turn every student into a habitual, critical, and lifelong independent reader. This includes getting every student, including those far behind grade level,  to enjoy the act of reading and lose themselves in the wonder of a great book. It includes reading widely across a variety of genres and to develop their own tastes as readers. To be able to critique literature and non-fiction writing, to increase fluency, stamina, comprehension, and vocabulary through a joyful process of frequent, voluminous reading.

With a 92% student population recieving free and reduced lunch, you won't find a more economically disadvantaged school population, or one with more heart, generosity, or enthusiam for books and learning.
